What Is a README Generator?

A README generator creates professional, well-structured README.md files for your GitHub repositories and open-source projects. The README is the first thing visitors see when they land on your repository — it determines whether they'll use your project, contribute to it, or move on. A great README includes a clear description, installation instructions, usage examples, API documentation, and contribution guidelines.

Writing a README from scratch is tedious. You need to format Markdown correctly, create shield.io badges, write consistent section headers, build a table of contents, and include tech stack badges. Most developers either skip these elements or copy-paste from other projects, resulting in incomplete or inconsistent documentation.

Our README generator provides a visual form-based editor with template presets (Minimal, Standard Open Source, npm Package, Full Documentation), automatic badge generation for npm, GitHub, and license shields, tech stack badges for 30+ technologies, customizable sections with live Markdown preview, and one-click copy. Build a complete README in minutes instead of hours — all in your browser.

How to Generate a README.md

  1. Choose a preset — Select Minimal (installation + usage + license), Standard Open Source (adds features, contributing, authors), npm Package (adds API reference, config), or Full Documentation (all sections including FAQ, roadmap, screenshots).
  2. Fill in project details — Enter your project name, description, GitHub username/repo, npm package name, and optional logo URL.
  3. Configure badges — Toggle badges for npm version, license, build status, downloads, GitHub stars, open issues, and pull requests. Badges are auto-generated using shields.io.
  4. Select tech stack — Click technologies your project uses (React, TypeScript, Node.js, Docker, etc.) to add styled tech stack badges to your README.
  5. Customize sections — Enable/disable and edit the content of each section: Features, Installation, Usage, API Reference, Configuration, Contributing, License, Authors, FAQ, Roadmap, and more.
  6. Copy the result — Switch to the Preview tab to see the raw Markdown, then click "Copy Markdown" to copy it to your clipboard.
